On thursday morning we got up suuuuuper early because I had a Metro Tokyo field trip. We met at the Ryogoku train station near the sumo stadium and near the edo tokyo museum.
First we had to take the subway to Azabu-Juban where I get off to go to TUJ, but apparently I was spacier than usual that morning because I took the namboku like in the opposite direction than i should have (because i'm retarded) but since i allowed time for getting lost howesan and I got to the meeting place with time to spare and had awesome pastries for breakfast.
The first place we went to was a temple that first housed Sumo in tokyo. Before it was held in a stadium, sumo took place in temples.
There were also memorial statues to not only people at this temple but also to pets. Here's one to a cat who when his master had no more money left, brought him a gold coin.
Here's a weird building that was at teh temple. It looks like a random building from a FF game.
The temple entrance gate was not the normal "tori" shape because of the temple's sumo roots.
Here, you can see the sumo stadium on the left and on the right is the trainstation. (when howesan and i were walking to the class meeting place we passed the stadium and saw sumo training.. it was kinda cool. later, we were walking somewhere on the field trip and a sumo on a bike came by. oh, it's a sumo town.
Is it a sniper tower?! no! it's the place where traditionally people call out to the town to come see the sumo tournament. but... it certainly looks like a sniper tower...
Then we sent to look at the sumida river. accross you can see some lovely advertising. (howesan was delighted by the fender ad) On a building waay to the right (and not in the pic) there were a mickey and mini mouse painted on a building.
There was also some awesome grafiti...
Then we entered a garden that was originally created to have a pond that would rise and fall with the tide, but since the earthquake and the bombing in ww2, it's no longer as awesome as it once was. it's still quite spiffing though.
Then we walked over to a memorial to those people killed in the fires during th 1923 earthquake.
here's the museum/temple building there. inside it had pictures and paintings of the distruction...
This is a painting of the "sky scraping pavillion" that broke 2/3 of the way up and wasn't rebuilt after the earthquake.
There was a class fieldtrip of small children outside. They were sooo cute. Even howesan thought they were adorable.. and she's not a fan of small children.
um... Be Green!??
There was an outdoor "sculputre" thing where melted metal things from the fire were on display.
After that we went back to school, went to Japanese where I had a midterm. Howesan helped me practice so i didn't suck too much.
Then we went to japanese culture where we discussed class work for a bit and then watched My Neighber Totoro, in honor of our class field trip that Sunday where we would be going to the Ghibli Museum. I hadn't seen the movie since like 2nd grade and the only part I remembered were the dust bunnies in the beginning.
Then I took howesan back, and went to my final class where we discussed the midterm that would be taking place the next class period.
I came back and we went to sleep.
